Vermont Symphony Orchestra

Heidi Soons

Where were you born and (if different) where did you grow up? Englewood, NJ, with summers at Clay Point in Colchester

Current residence and marital status/family : Colchester with 11 family members sprinkled nearby plus cat Poco Meu Mosso

Education: BA in harp performance from University of Vermont

When did you start playing with the VSO? 1978 (Rutland HS—Ravel Pavane—boyfriend George sent me roses—Angela Combes handed them to me)

Other current jobs besides VSO: not qualified!

Hobbies: Cooking! Thanks to Cook’s Illustrated, my people are happier.

How did you get started in music? Three older brothers all practicing Für Elise; my mom finding me a different piano teacher; meeting Jane Weidensaul who thought I would be good on the harp.

Describe a typical day: Depends on the weather. Inside or outside.

Dream job if not musician: manual demolition expert

Secret ambition: to learn American sign language and/or own a smaller car

Favorite vice: need more room

People would be surprised to know that: I have survived without having an internet presence.

Best advice I ever got: Don’t gliss too fast. You don’t want to hit the top too soon.

Favorite way to spend an evening: on the dock with family, extra players, cocktails, bonfire…or jeopardy

Pet peeve: (oh so many) those little stickers on avocados

I’m most proud of: My daughter Aprille—she turned out great!
