Vermont Symphony Orchestra

Anne Janson

Where were you born and (if different) where did you grow up? Burlington

Current residence and marital status/family: Ferrisburgh, VT; married with three children, Alice, Edward, and Willem; pets Chewbacca and Hobbes

Education: BM Hartt School of Music; MM Manhattan School of Music

When did you start playing with the VSO? 1987

Other current jobs besides VSO: music faculty at University of Vermont and Middlebury College

Favorite composer: Depends what mood I’m in! If I had to nail it down, I’m a traditional kind of girl—Bach, Mozart, Mendelssohn…but there is also Puccini!

Hobbies: skiing, sailing

How did you get started in music? My mother exposed me through her love of opera and going to performances while living in London

Describe a typical day: Every day is different because of where I am teaching, rehearsing, or performing—but my favorite way to start the day is a couple hours of early morning practicing followed by other stuff, then a couple hours here and there of practicing, followed by other stuff, then a bit more practice to top it all off.

Dream job if not musician: sailing captain

Secret ambition: Sail around the world all my myself!

People would be surprised to know that: I am not your typical, stereotype flute player.

Best advice I ever got: Enjoy yourself and take a vacation from practicing.

Favorite way to spend an evening: outdoors by a fire, winter or summer

I’m most proud of: the relationship I had with my mother
