Making Music Together

Over the winter, five Vermont Symphony Orchestra musicians took on new young music students from Brattleboro, Ferrisburgh, Colchester, Bolton, and Richmond via weekly Zoom lessons, supported by funds from the Tarrant Foundation. The musicians and their students developed strong relationships and made beautiful music together.

One of those special new relationships came from our Assistant Concertmaster Kathy Andrew who tutored 10-year-old violinist Ella Thompson Rose, who is a student at Lake Champlain Waldorf School. Ella and Kathy made a final duo recording of Auld Lang Syne to celebrate their newfound musical connection.

We made [a video] in gratitude for a lovely connection, one that touched both our hearts. Plus we started right after New Years with this song, and it was fun to see how much progress she made when we returned to it to finish our lessons together.” – Kathy Andrew

VSO Violinist Laura Markowitz, Principal Trombone Matt Wright, Second Flute Anne Janson and Principal Trumpet Mark Emery complete the roster of VSO teachers who will continue the free online one-on-one lessons through early summer.
