SUMMARY:Jukebox: Porch Songs - Americana Roots - Rutland
DESCRIPTION:TICKETS FOR RUTLAND ARE SOLD OUT. There are still tickets for the April 17 South Pomfret concert available here.  \nAs spring arrives\, we bring you a special\, intimate Jukebox program that invites listeners onto the proverbial porch—where music flows freely\, stories are shared\, and a sense of place is felt in every note. Porch Songs honors the legacy of American folk traditions and the communal spirit that sustains them.   \nFeaturing Pulitzer Prize-winner Jennifer Higdon’s exploration of her Southern roots in Southern Harmony\, the Appalachian-infused stylings of fiddler and composer Mark O’Connor and brand new arrangements of music by bluegrass legend Matt Flinner alongside many more. This program celebrates the magical place where classical and folk traditions meet.  \nThis Jukebox tour will be accompanied by an interactive audio and visual display of Vermont folk heritage\, steeped in song selections from the Helen Hartness Flanders Ballad Collection at Middlebury College. We are also grateful for the assistance of the Henry Sheldon Museum and the Vermont Folklife Center. These displays are curated by Lyn Lauffer. \nBrooke Quiggins-Saulnier and Joana Genova\, violin; Stefanie Taylor\, viola; and John Dunlop\, cello. Hosted and curated by Matt LaRocca. \nThis concert is kindly supported by the Young Cultural Endowment Fund for Rutland\, and Vermont Humanities. \n

SUMMARY:Men\, Marble\, and Machines
DESCRIPTION:BUY TICKETS HERE \nThe Vermont Marble Museum (VMM) and the Vermont Symphony Orchestra (VSO) cordially invite you to a screening of Men\, Marble\, and Machines at the Paramount Theatre in Rutland at 7:00 p.m. on May 12\, 2023! \n\n\n\n\n\nVSO and VMM are co-hosting this event in honor of VSO past board chairs\, and VMM emeriti board co-chairs\, Robert and Victoria Young. The evening will feature the 1984 award winning documentary film\, Men\, Marble and Machines\, and a 21-piece VSO Chamber Orchestra under the direction of conductor\, Matt LaRocca\, performing works by composer Nicholas Scarim (who wrote the award-winning score for Men\, Marble and Machines). \n\n\n\nIt is not only an industry documentary – it is also an artful study of the beauty of marble\, the technological process and workmanship that transform Vermont marble into landmark structures\, national monuments\, and tactile art. The film follows marble from deep inside the vast underground Danby quarry to the Vermont Marble Company’s finishing mill in Proctor\, where cranes\, gang saws\, machines and marble workers cut\, form\, polish and carve. The striking cinematography and evocative score guide the viewer to appreciate the beauty of the process\, as well as to understand and appreciate the skills of the Vermonters who work with marble.

SUMMARY:VSO at the Paramount: Paradise and Light
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets Here \nAt long last the VSO Chorus rejoins the Orchestra for a return to the Paramount including two fascinating choral works. The concert features the world premiere of Dr. Matthew Evan Taylor‘s piece\, from despair … Light!\, which forms part of his African American Requiem Series. from despair…Light! explores gospel choral traditions of hymn lining\, touching on themes of grief\, loss\, and shared healing.  Vaughan Williams’ Toward the Unknown Region\, set to poetry by Walt Whitman\, celebrates the spirit of youthful adventure. These choral pieces in the first half are accompanied by a subtly nuanced work for strings by Augusta Read Thomas\, a self-described poet-composer based in Chicago. VSO Music Director candidate James Burton concludes the evening with Dvorak’s richly melodic Symphony No. 7\, which the composer hoped would be “capable of stirring the world.” \nThe concert begins at 3:00 p.m and is preceded at 2:00 p.m. by Musically Speaking\, a free pre-concert discussion that provides entertaining insight into the evening’s program. The VSO Chorus will be joined by members of the Montpelier Community Gospel Choir\, Counterpoint Chorus\, and Albany Pro Musica. \n  \nPROGRAM:  \nMatthew Evan Taylor – from despair…Light!  \nAugusta Read Thomas –  Of Paradise and Light \nVaughan Williams – Toward the Unknown Region \nDvorak – Symphony No. 7 \n  \n For accessibility information at this venue\, please contact Grace Spain at 802-864-5741 or at hello@vso.org. \n  \n \n \n \n \nThis concert is generously sponsored by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. \nAdditional thanks to Choral Arts New England\, the Vermont Arts Council\, and Vermont Humanities for support of this project.    \n \nThis concert is also generously supported by the Courtyard Marriott. \nFunding in part by The Robert De Cormier Fund\, The William Gray Vocal Music Fund\, and The Young Cultural Endowment for Rutland Fund.
