SUMMARY:Jukebox at Higher Ground
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets Here \nBrooklyn-based composer and guitarist Kaki King\, hailed by Rolling Stone as “a genre unto herself” and one of the publication’s “New Guitar Gods\,” joins the Vermont Symphony Orchestra’s Jukebox String Quartet on October 14 in Bennington. With nine albums released over the past 14 years\, Kaki’s eclectic guitar voice has been heard live on every continent over the course of multiple world tours\, and at variety of prestigious arts centers\, including the Kennedy Center\, Lincoln Center\, MoMA\, LACMA\, and The Met. Her music for numerous film and TV soundtracks is acclaimed\, including “August Rush” and Sean Penn’s “Into the Wild\,” for which she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Original Score. \n“I’m a guitar player. Classical ain’t what it used to be\, the repertoire has changed radically\, people are so much more open to playing contemporary compositions these days. It isn’t this sort of pissing contest that perhaps it used to be. The field of players out there has changed radically over the last few years\, and it’s so cool!” she said. \nOpening its sixth season with Kaki\, the VSO’s Jukebox string quartet performance includes music composed by Bryce Dessner (guitarist for The National)\, Joachim Rodrigo\, Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR)\, and more\, curated by Artistic Advisor and Project Conductor Matt LaRocca. \nThe performance will be at The Deane Carriage Barn at Bennington College. This concert is a collaborative production between VSO Jukebox and the Deane Carriage Barn Concert series. \nSingle tickets on a sliding scale starting at $10. Doors at 7:30 pm\, concert at 8:30 pm. \nSponsored by Northfield Savings Bank Innovation Fund & the Ruth & Peter Metz Family Foundation

SUMMARY:VSO at the Flynn: Paradise and Light
DESCRIPTION:Buy Tickets Here \nAt long last the VSO Chorus rejoins the Orchestra for a return to the Flynn including two fascinating choral works. The concert features the world premiere of Dr. Matthew Evan Taylor‘s piece\, from despair … Light!\, which forms part of his African American Requiem Series. from despair…Light! explores gospel choral traditions of hymn lining\, touching on themes of grief\, loss\, and shared healing.  Vaughan Williams’ Toward the Unknown Region\, set to poetry by Walt Whitman\, celebrates the spirit of youthful adventure. These choral pieces in the first half are accompanied by a subtly nuanced work for strings by Augusta Read Thomas\, a self-described poet-composer based in Chicago. VSO Music Director candidate James Burton concludes the evening with Dvorak’s richly melodic Symphony No. 7\, which the composer hoped would be “capable of stirring the world.” \nThe concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and is preceded at 6:30 p.m. by Musically Speaking\, a free pre-concert discussion that provides entertaining insight into the evening’s program. The VSO Chorus will be joined by members of the Montpelier Community Gospel Choir\, Counterpoint Chorus\, and Albany Pro Musica. \n  \nPROGRAM:  \nMatthew Evan Taylor – from despair…Light!  \nAugusta Read Thomas –  Of Paradise and Light \nVaughan Williams – Toward the Unknown Region \nDvorak – Symphony No. 7 \n  \n For accessibility information at this venue\, please contact Grace Spain at 802-864-5741 or at hello@vso.org. \n  \n \n \n \n \nThis concert is generously sponsored by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. \nAdditional thanks to Choral Arts New England\, the Vermont Arts Council\, and Vermont Humanities for support of this project.    \n \nThis concert is also generously supported by the Courtyard Marriott. \nFunding in part by The Robert De Cormier Fund and The William Gray Vocal Music Fund.
